Is it possible to register a trademark using stock icons?
There are many online services that help you create logos. These SaaS platforms often advertise that they offer anywhere from 100 to 1,000 icons and images. Some of these sites are capable of producing quite decent logos (I’ll compare them in detail later).
For example, when I entered our company name, SpintoAI, on logomaker.com, it provided many icon examples.
The last one with the world map looks pretty good. When I selected it, a window opened to allow changes to colors and text.
This raises an important question: Is it possible to use these icons or logos provided by such sites as they are, and still register them as trademarks? Customization options are often limited.
The answer is Yes and No.

Why ‘Yes’?

The images and icons provided by these sites are typically copyright-cleared by the platform. So, if you purchase a logo from one of these sites, there shouldn’t be any copyright issues, making it a "Yes" from that perspective.

Why ‘No’?

However, there’s a significant issue to consider. Is it really possible to register a trademark using this logo? For a trademark or design to be registered, the logo must be unique. Even if you manage to register it, problems could arise if many other companies are using the same logo, leading to trademark conflicts. Therefore, if you use stock images or icons as-is, the lack of uniqueness may prevent you from successfully registering a trademark.
In conclusion, both licensing and trademark registration aspects need careful consideration. Do not use images and icons from logo-making sites without customization! It's advisable to customize them as much as possible before use.
LIFETIME LOGO MAKER provides easy customization options for vector icons, helping you ensure the uniqueness of your logo. This allows you to navigate both licensing issues and trademark registration successfully.
